Fear of Heights

I would have to say that I am a tad bit scared of heights.  I love being adventurous, and flying does not bother me.  The only time that I am really scared of heights is when I feel like I could fall off something that is high up or I do not feel like I have a lot of support under me.  My fear really does not stop me from things that are high up off the ground.  I still go on fair rides and if I ever get the chance I would definitely climb a mountain or something “outdoorsy” like that.  The part that makes me nervous about heights is falling.  I can picture dropping an egg from way up high, and see it splatter all over the ground.  If I were standing on a mountain or a cliff, I think it would be amazing, but I would not stand to close to the edge.  I really do not fear heights, I just become a little bit nervous way up high.

There are many different kinds of fears of heights.  They really range from very minor, like my fear, to extremely severe, like not being able to be off the group what so ever.  When a person is truly afraid of heights, they will tense up, have cluttered thoughts, and not trust their own sense of balance.  The biggest problem with having a fear of heights is that it can really limit one’s life and the activities that they take part in because they are trying to avoid being scared.

The best way to overcome the fear of heights is to just face the fear.  According to Nicole Wilson, “There are six easy steps to overcome the fear of heights” (Wilson). A person should start out slow and then work their way up to higher places.  Over time the fear can be conquered, but a person has to really want it, otherwise they will live their whole life afraid of heights.
